The Canadian Brewing Awards are the premiere competition for judging the quality of
Canadian brewed beer. The contest is the only truly national competition that invites
breweries of all sizes from across the country to compete in a blind tasting to see who
brews the best beer in a variety of style categories. A Canadian Brewing Award medal
is now a widely recognized symbol of brewing excellence in Canada. A panel of
approximately 25 Certified Beer Judges (BJCP), consider five criteria: aroma,
appearance, flavour, mouth-feel, and overall impression when judging the beer.
The competition also serves as an important vehicle for informing the Canadian beer-
drinking public about the variety of and quality of commercially available beers
throughout the land. And every year the competition attracts new entries from the
smallest startup breweries, to the largest of the large, all of whom are dedicated to
carefully crafting their product.

“The Canadian Brewing Awards are marking the 10th year of celebrating the best in
Canadian brewing achievement by announcing some very major changes to the event,”
said Rob Engman, President of TAPS Media, the parent company of TAPS The Beer
Magazine and the Canadian Brewing Awards Conference. In response to multiple
requests from Canadian brewers, TAPS Media is changing the timing of the judging
and awards ceremony to Spring, providing award winners the opportunity to capitalize
on and promote their achievements throughout the busy summer season. Another major
change will see the awards held outside of Ontario. TAPS Media is elated to take the
Awards Ceremony on the road to Quebec, a province steeped in brewing history with a
strong and vibrant beer culture.“For the first time in the history of the Canadian
Brewing Awards, TAPS will host the awards in Quebec,” said Engman. “It delights me
to announce that Mondial de la bière, one of the country’s best and biggest beer
festivals, is coming on board as a Co-Presenting Sponsor this year. We are working
together to showcase the best of the Canadian beer industry.” “The Mondial de la bière
team is very proud to Co-present and Sponsor the 10th annual Canadian Brewing
Awards Conference,” said Mondial de la bière président Jeannine Marois. “This
partnership presents a celebration of Canadian beer culture, using the Mondial de la
bières International platform to showcase it to the global beer industry.”
The 10th anniversary of the CBAs will also see the expansion of the Awards Ceremony
to include an additional daylong conference featuring guest speakers, seminars and
networking events geared to the interests and concerns of Canadian brewers. The panel
of speakers will include Canadian brewing pioneers, marketing professionals, beer
educators and more. The judging, which is sanctioned by the Beer Judge Certification
Program (BJCP), will take place in Toronto in May and will feature beers from coast to
coast. The 2011 Canadian Brewing Awards were the largest to date with over 450 beers
entered from over 80 breweries.Cass Enright, the founder of BarTowel.com, will host
the Awards Presentation Ceremony for the third straight year.
